Introduction
Chapter 2 is where the teaching of the Bhagavad Gita truly begins. Arjuna, who ended Chapter 1 seated in despair, now asks Krishna to guide him as a disciple. Krishna answers with the knowledge of the eternal Self, the duty of action and the qualities of a person of steady wisdom.
Sanjaya narrates the opening verses (2.1, 2.9–2.10). Arjuna speaks in verses 2.4–2.8 and asks his question about steady wisdom in 2.54. Krishna, called Shri Bhagavan in the text, speaks all the other verses. Because it summarises so much of the Gita, this chapter is often called the Gita in brief.
How the chapter unfolds
- Krishna challenges Arjuna's despair (2.1–2.3)
Krishna calls Arjuna's grief a weakness of heart and urges him to rise.
- Arjuna becomes a disciple (2.4–2.10)
Arjuna explains his dilemma, surrenders to Krishna as a student and then falls silent.
- The eternal Self (2.11–2.30)
Krishna teaches that the Self is unborn, undying and untouched by weapons, fire, water or wind; the body changes like clothing.
- Duty as a warrior (2.31–2.38)
Krishna turns to Arjuna's svadharma, the consequences of withdrawing, and acting with equanimity.
- The yoga of action (2.39–2.53)
Krishna introduces karma yoga: act without attachment to results, with an even mind and a resolute understanding.
- The person of steady wisdom (2.54–2.72)
In answer to Arjuna's question, Krishna describes the sthitaprajna, who has mastered the senses and lives in peace.
Sanskrit text follows the widely used Gita Press / IIT Kanpur Gita Supersite recension. The Hindi and English meanings and explanations are explanatory renderings prepared for this site, not the only authoritative interpretation.

Key teachings introduced here, such as the right to action but not to its fruits (2.47), equanimity as yoga (2.48) and the chain from attachment to ruin (2.62–2.63), are developed throughout the chapters that follow.
Reflections for daily life
- When grief or fear clouds a decision, what would it mean to ask for guidance as sincerely as Arjuna does?
- Which of today's tasks could you give full attention to, while letting go of anxiety about the outcome?
- What do you most often dwell on, and how might that shape your desires and reactions?
- In which situations could you practise remaining steady in both success and failure?
