Introduction

The Bhagavad Gita opens not with teaching but with a crisis. On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, the armies of the Kauravas and the Pandavas stand ready for war. The blind king Dhritarashtra asks his charioteer Sanjaya, who has been granted the gift of seeing distant events, to describe what is happening.

Three voices are heard in this chapter: Dhritarashtra, who asks a single question; Sanjaya, who narrates; and Arjuna, whose grief fills the second half. Duryodhana's words (verses 3–11) and Krishna's one brief sentence (verse 25) are reported within Sanjaya's narration.

How the chapter unfolds

  1. The king's question (1.1)

Dhritarashtra asks what his sons and the sons of Pandu did at Kurukshetra.

  2. Duryodhana surveys the armies (1.2–1.11)

Duryodhana approaches Drona, names the great warriors on both sides and orders that Bhishma be protected.

  3. The sounding of the conches (1.12–1.19)

Bhishma blows his conch; Krishna, Arjuna and the Pandava heroes answer with theirs, and the sound shakes the Kaurava ranks.

  4. The chariot between the armies (1.20–1.27)

Arjuna asks Krishna to place his chariot between the two armies, and there he sees teachers, elders, relatives and friends on both sides.

  5. Arjuna's despair (1.28–1.46)

Overcome by compassion and grief, Arjuna describes his trembling body, questions the value of victory and argues against the war.

  6. Arjuna lays down his bow (1.47)

Arjuna sets aside his bow and arrows and sits down in the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with sorrow.

Concluding summary

Chapter 1 sets the scene for the whole Gita. A capable warrior, at the decisive moment, is overwhelmed by the conflict between duty and affection. His arguments are sincere and draw on family and tradition, yet they arise from grief and confusion rather than clarity.

Krishna does not yet teach. The chapter ends in silence, preparing for the dialogue that begins in Chapter 2.

Reflections for daily life

  • Inner conflict is a natural part of life; the Gita begins by acknowledging it honestly rather than hiding it.
  • Strong emotion can make an argument feel convincing. Pausing to examine where a decision comes from is itself a spiritual practice.
  • Arjuna turns to Krishna in his difficulty. Seeking wise counsel when confused is a sign of strength, not weakness.
  • The battlefield of Kurukshetra is often read as a symbol of the inner field where every person faces choices between right and wrong.
